Default Is it worth it?

Well, here goes, don't chastise me too severely, lol...I'm a former EQ2 player (although 35 is the highest level I achieved) who is now, and has been playing WoW for a little over a year. And by playing WoW I do mean on a committed level, I have a high level, well geared character that I use to regularly participate in end-game raiding and it's a blast.

But...

Recently, I've just been getting this itch to come back to EQ2 - I love playing WoW, but sometimes I miss the more detailed and intricate experience in EQ2. I have no end-game raid experience in EQ2, and just want to get a feel for how things are going - keep in mind, I'm MMO'ing in a game now that has 200 servers (or something like that) - it's a little intimidating to come back and see 15-20 servers live for EQ2. So give me your opinions -

1) Is EQ2 still going strong enough to make an MMO'er happy or will I end up being the only person in Antonica /ooc'ing for help?

2) If you've played both WoW and EQ2, is it worth spending the time to hit the end-game content, or am I better off sticking with WoW?

3) Any other advice/opinions you would give someone who is considering making the switch back...

And don't tell me to play both, I just don't have the time to play both and still enjoy playing or progress in any meaningful way. Thanks to everyone that replies

First off I played both, and I stopped playing wow because I was complety burnt out on the game. I use to raid had a few high level characters one that I reguarly PvP'd with. Really had a good guild, in alot of ways hated to leave but frankly since I was playing since launch I was just plum tired of the game. Even the newest expansion comming out still didn't peak any interest anymore.

Secondly PLAY what you enjoy, I am not you, you are not me, so I can't tell you want you enjoy. IF You enjoy wow play wow, if you don't enjoy wow (for whatever reason(s)) then do something different.

to your questions, well I'll try and answer them can't say they are the best answers. Sorry.

1) Is eq2 still going strong. Really depends who you want to believe. EQ2 from what I can tell has never had a HUGE following that wow has had, but that doesn't mean it's dead either. I don't really see any new games comming out in the near future that will really make this or heck any of the existing MMO's just fall over and die. AoC folks thought was going to do that but I knew off the bat it wouldn't and well guess what I got prooven right. I think really it will come down to what you like to do and the population of the server you go to will depend more on what your experience with eq2 will be. My server may not be the most active server but even at 80 there are still pug's happening for instances even thou folks like to say eq2 is dead.

2) To be honest I am only mildly raiding in eq2 versus in wow I was hardcore raiding. Now by mildly raiding I can only say done most of hate, and up to VS atm for progession. Can't say we are that far so I can only give an early description of what's going on. So far I would say it seems that Blizzard definatly had some things correct when it came to raiding, but overall I am enjoying my time I do raid in eq2. I hear there are some really realy boring/anoying fights. Heck VS is all about power management if your power goes too low or get's too high you will effectivly wipe the raid. One really large stickler point I do have about eq2 raiding is raid size versus classes. Basically there are 24 raid slots and 24 different classes to me THIS IS REALLY REALLY BAD DESIGN. In wow we had 25 raid slots but way not near that many classes so blizzard could more effectivly balance out the content which I think is also an issue with eq2. /shrug again I am only starting the raiding trek with eq2 so take this with a grain of salt. I am sure there will be many other posts agree'ing/disagreeing with what I've said. Heck I'm sure someone will just tell you go back to "ezmode wow" lol like they ever seen the raids in wow.

3) Also I would strongly suggest use the search feature in the newbie yard and in this forum these types of threads come up about every few days and they do have alot of good points.

You will have to spend most of your time soloing until level 80. Most overland content has been nerfed to single target solo encounters, so you don't even need a group to do things in most overland zones. The population seems pretty thin IMO, most people seem to be level 1-20 or 70-80. I spend most of my time on my alts /lfg and end up having to solo anyway. Well, I guess my point is you will have to solo. A lot. Joining a guild with people in your level range could help, but even then people just seem to enjoy the solo questing.

2) If you've played both WoW and EQ2, is it worth spending the time to hit the end-game content, or am I better off sticking with WoW?

I only played wow for a week before I quit, but EQ2 endgame is a little stale I think. Once you are level 70, you solo quest your way to 80. It's not really optional. At level 80 the solo game is pretty much over; you will have to join groups to progress your gear. T8 is heavily instanced based, you will most likely spend your time running 5 different instances until you get all the stuff you want. There's a couple of nice pieces that drop in the 3 open dungeons, but most of the contested dungeon loot is garbage. Once you have everything you want from instances (which took me about 4 weeks to achieve), you are pretty much done. It's time to either raid to continue progressing or do something else entirely like craft or roll a new character.

For me, and many of my guildies and friends there isn't even anything to do outside of raiding. There's certainly no point killing solo mobs in overland zones, and we pretty much have the best gear you can get with a single group. So, many of us don't log in until raid time, and log out immediatly when raid is done. Others of us just stand around town all day, or play alts or try and find something to do. Besides farming coin and the small possibility of a master spell, there really isn't anyway to further progress without raiding. I think endgame raiding will keep you occupied if you like to play 3 hours or so a day 5 days or so a week, but if you play much more than that, you are gonna be bored with nothing to do.

3) Any other advice/opinions you would give someone who is considering making the switch back...

The main thing that bothers me about eq2 is it's very difficult to get a good group and level up. On the off-chance you do get in a group, you are likely to have huge level gaps between the members getting horrible xp, and people playing in solo quested garbage. The majority of people solo the majority of the time either by choice or because they are forced to due to lack of others wanting to group. If you want help with some obscure quest or zone... forget about it. Join a guild and hope someone will help you. Not much chance getting a pickup group to do anything besides the "main" dungeons. Also, I think the game is way to fast to level up. Maybe if it took longer to level there would be more players spread out in all tiers. As I mentioned earlier, most people are either on low level characters or end game characters... very little in between.

There was a time when people would group to level up and gear up and such, and solo while /lfg or not much time to play. Now it's pretty much the opposite. People seem to solo most of the time, doing random hold-you-by-the-hand solo quest lines in solo overland zones, and occasionally join a group.

And don't tell me to play both, I just don't have the time to play both and still enjoy playing or progress in any meaningful way. Thanks to everyone that replies SMILEY<img src=" />

In summary, eq2 is a great game. There's a lot too it and the most content I've ever seen in a video game period. But, you will have to solo your butt off and much of the group content will have to wait until it is gray and worthless and you can solo it. Making friends to group with or finding a guild with mid level players is difficult because most mid level players are either power leveling to 80 or so casual you will out-level them way too fast. I play on the highest populated server Antonia Bayle. Any other server you're pretty much on your own until endgame.

Wait, wait, wait..

Sorry, Wing, I have to disagree with you on this as it is completely misleading. I play on Lucan D'Lere and what you've written about is vastly different from what I've experienced.

The only time I've soloed has been when I've been tradeskilling or faffing about doing silly templar things on my own. By and large, however, I've either been in small groups or full groups depending on the content.

Sure, you can solo all day if you want, however, I think that's more of a choice that you make than the way things are. As for there being no middle level range people, again, that's not what I've experienced.

People in EQ2 are generally helpful and friendly - at least from what I've experienced and I've a myriad of alts and my main is 74. Depending on your attitude and play-style, your mileage may vary.

I've never had any difficulty finding things to do with other people - be it in my guild or otherwise.

If you used to play, right now you've got free access until the end of July.

Re-activate, sit through the downloads (which will include all content) and see for yourself.

If it turns out you aren't having as much fun in EQ2 as you are in WoW, you're out nothing but some time.
