guild wars is free but not as good on the whole, if you can afford 9 quid (dunno bout $'s) ffxi is much better, because you paying for the difference, the lvl cap on GW is 20, but 75 on ffxi. the world is bigger and you can just generally do more. i've played both and i efinetly prefer ffxi, GW gets boring after about a month

Guild Wars is more designed for causal players. It takes about a month or two to get to level 20 playing causally. Questing is pretty straightforward. Also from level 1-20 your all by yourself. You don't need to create parties for leveling, but maybe for questing. After level 20 your goal is to get the best armor and pvp. Also there are no monthly payments. Each game is a different game completely. Prophecies - Medieval setting, Factions - Asian/Ancient China setting, Nightfall - Desert/Arabian setting.
As for FFXI... I don't know too much but leveling to 75 can take a very long time. It took my friend about a year. Also you need to find groups to level. Bosses are outside so you'll be chasing it while other players are trying to get the kill. The Japanese players aren't very friendly. There is no PVP. It's a much tougher game overall. Also you need to pay 10 a month. (I think) |

75 Can take about 4 Months if you level solidly. Not all Bosses are outside, and all of them are forced spawn, or in BCNM/KSNM so it's first come, first served. The Japanese are the most friendly people on the game, the Americans on there are bastards. There is PvP, Ballista and Brenner. Yes, it is a tougher game overall, that makes it more rewarding, and more fun. The game is bigger, more attractive with more to do. I'd definitely take XI over GW or WoW. |

It all depends on what kind of game you're looking for, and what you like to do. Personally I prefer Guild Wars. But thats because I like to PvP, and I also like the limit to how many skills you have on your bar. ~Riku |

within FFXI there are several major storylines -The three Nations, Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urghan, and Wings of the Goddess(the last four being expansion packs). They all have a unique story in the world and come to a ending but the game itself keeps expanding.
and other than the major ones, there are plenty of other stories to be told, through quest usually which also have thier own beginning and ending. |
